    DeathOrber plugin

    I found a possible solution to the xp orbs being a lag hazard. http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/deathorber/ This plugin will makes it so xp orbs will not drop when a player dies, but mobs will still drop xp. I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but it's worth taking a look at.
