Hey guys,

I have a question for the mods. I was recently informed that automated monster harvesters are not allowed on the server. Why is this? I realize that automated farms with pistons and redstone severely bog down the server. I also realize that automated farms can cause imbalances in economies if a person stays afk while farming... However, when it comes to monster farms, they are going to spawn anyway (from things like monster spawners). If a player stands in a safe spot and continuously kills mobs while water washes the items downstream, is that any different than letting a little lava kill the creature instead? Aren't there measures in place to prevent a player from being AFK too long? Is it such a bad thing to have this type of thing in survival?

Don't get me wrong, I am not against following the server's rules (as it is an awesome one). I just would like clarification on this, and possibly a bit more reasoning behind it. I couldn't find much in the way of clarification on the forums already, so I thought I would post asking about it!

Thanks!
MJ

Also wasn't sure where to put this, so feel free to move it if it's in the wrong spot.

You said it, it causes unbalance in the server's economy. Yes, it is very diffrent from killing the monster and actually having to do something. It has an involved risk rather that just standing there with no risk of damage or losing your stuff.

uhh this was put in place when people were afk farming animals in giant mob killers and crop harvesters. it forces the server to work harder because of all the moving water and items and mobs... the server has to follow where these items are and all that. when items change from block to block like a dropped item the server needs to follow and update it to work. it causes the server to ping in lag for it.

we do have an afk kicker. but auto farms are essentially a bannable offense for not clearly understanding the rules.

I understand that it's a bannable offense. Thus why I asked for clarification on the rule and how it applies. I did not realize that the server has to work that hard to track the items, but it makes sense. I appreciate the feedback, Fluffy!

Actually, one last question about this - Is using water near a spawner (but still attacking the mobs) considered an automated farm/harvester of sorts? I don't want to do anything wrong and inadvertently get myself banned. Sorry for all the questions! :)

I asked the same thing when I was new to the server and they basically said If it pushes the mobs into one small space for you to easily kill its still not allowed.

Indeed, because you can set a macro that kills them for you.
So you're not afk and raking possibly massive amounts of items. You could theoretically keep this on forever, with a Minecraft account dedicated to each mob in survival if you want.
Then you forward all the items to an offshore account and sell/use them!

hey you know some times read the rules :

http://www.minecraftaddicts.com/rules.php

Automated farming is prohibited on this server.

An automated farm is one that does not require manual harvesting. Not only do automated farms cause imbalance in the economy, they are also a huge waste of server resources. It is perfectly acceptable to plant a large farm and harvest it manually. All automated farms will be removed without warning.

happy to help
