The bettergrass mod is no longer required to improve the look of hills. Your texture pack can provide a solid grass block texture instead of the "capped" style (see painterlypack.net for example.) You can get weird colours if the biome shading is glitched. I've been dazzled at how gorgeous the world is with the wide range of colours available now, and am a little baffled as to why the default texture pack has not been updated to take advantage of the new code. Perhaps because it's done so much better by the texture community. (Like the many mods Notch is duplicating in his distribution.)
