I've been on many servers and it seems nicknames and the /afk command are public. I was wondering if we could have that here too

/afk just makes things cluttered, with everyone using it and such.

/nick would be cool though, but they'd have to edit config to limit the length of it to 30, to allow color codes.

I'm gonna say no to that, I don't think that's a good idea, especially with Mojang working on name-changes.

What did the rest of the staff say?

Name changes will be released in the next update or so... will we be?

One second, you're one name. Then you're another. And another. Aand another. See the point? /nickname will be abused, especially with some of the players.

And /afk, we do that anyway. We say into chat [AKF] or something along those lines.

Is there any need for you to interrogate staff?
The answer is no.

I'm sorry it was felt as if it was an interrogation, when truly I'm just interested in an more in depth ideology. This is a larger sized topic in other communities and not so much discussed here.

If people want to change their names, they can do it with the name changes coming somewhere during 1.8. As for a time frame in which we'll be updating, whenever possible.
We have to ensure that everything is working correctly (plugins, UUID changes etc.) and those things take time to make sure we continue to keep the server stable as possible.

I don't want /nick on this server, or anything that makes chat more complicated than it has to be.

We don't run ads through broadcast, we don't have super flash rainbow names for staff, we don't have sidebars that urge you to donate, and we have rules that keep chat respectful.

The simple style of chat we have here was something that appealed to me early on, and something I've grown to like a lot.

I didnt see see that thread with my search criteria. Thank you. I understand and honestly agree with MK and the rest.

Personally, I think /nick is a terrible idea. It spams chat and most people change their nick to completely random, even inappropriate things which causes confusion problems, especially for those who do not know of the /realname command.
/afk is also not a great idea as people would just spam it. However, it'd be cool for an auto AFK command so people don't try to message you as you're AFK. For example, if you were AFK for more than 10 minutes, the server automatically put an [AFK] prefix in front of your name.

In the OP's defense
That thread is 2.5 years old
So it is worth to retry a suggestion
Because decisions in the past don't have to be the same as now

Why am I saying this?
I remember people saying there will never be flying, in the build worlds, because we wanted as vanilla as possible there
Was not even allowed temporarily to make videos to show of builds or whatever
Now you can just buy it

As already stated, name changes are coming in 1.8 and therefore are not needed here currently.
Whilst /realname does work, if something is reported by someone on the forum whilst no staff are online and don't know about /realname it becomes impossible to track by moderators.

The old reasons also still apply.

The server also took a step away from vanilla a while ago, it was only ever really considered vanilla back in the old historic days.

I don't get why it's so important to signify to the general populace that you've stepped away from the keyboard for a few moments...

Especially when you don't need a reason the say that you're afk. If you want people to know you're afk, you can literally just msg them or tell them I'm chat. The whole /afk command is more for larger servers, or for the staff of that, usually. Its so when people need the staffs help, or a big donors help, its so they can know when the get back. But MCA is a small server and we don't need that, nor nick.
