a block of lapis would not sit in my 4 square grid, but it did sit to the side of it and I was still able to get the lapis out of the lapis block
 
Sounds like your inventory screen is a modified texture and not vanilla. In this update, we now have a shield slot to the bottom right of the player viewing window. Because of that, the inventory crafting grid was pushed further to the right. Fix: remove/update texture file '\resourcepacks\YourPackName\assets\minecraft\textures\gui\container\inventory.png'


 
Solved this matter with Nana in game, it was indeed her old textures causing the problems.
