I found this great post about lag created by builds, specifically redstone builds..

It basically boils down to one bit of advice.... saturate your build area with light (specifically, glowstone) because the block light level updates (how the server updates each block's light level) is the single biggest producer of lag and all those redstone torches and repeaters make the server have to constantly update surrounding block light levels, causing massive lag.
