How to rollback from 1.8 to 1.7_3

I have a freshly downloaded vinilla client and when ever i change the Jar to 1.7_3 i get a black screen after login

Hey dude, please make sure you're not running any high resolution texture packs etc. as this can cause problems in a vanilla jar without the HD texture fix.

doesnt matter, you need to make sure you are on the default textures BEFORE you switch to the vanilla jar else things go all pearshaped

also I was using glimmars steampunk pack, which wasn't high def
