hi all,
i want to share a technique i use to look for land, and to survey the map.

take the seed from the map, and put it into a single player creative game.

for example, the seed from the minecraft addicts build map is:

5580178301442455819

if you put this into the create world seed generator, you will get the same map as the build world,
and if you set the game mode as creative, you can fly around and check stuff out, co-ordinates will be the same.

it's a great way to find ravines, which are probably the best mining sites, although i would love to hear feedback on how to find good mining sites

cheers,
-mk

Its probably best that you dont do this at all and just deal with the joys of finding mining sites on without any external tools.

why not learn the map?
ariel views help you find the places you want to be.... and get a feel for the architecture of the landscape
also you can work with your plot when the server is down, get a different perspective.

I think its a great idea. Ideal for finding that perfect building spot. As for finding diamonds, well the ore deposits are so evenly placed, i cant see one plot having more than any other. And to be honest, ive got better things to do than getting excited about the odd diamond. They are not much use as a building material.

First off use Rei's Minimap if you want an aerial view (it's one of the few allowed mods) and second is the server ever down for more than a minute?? Not a lot of time to load sp, find where you left off and place your next block.

( : it's just an idea, an idea i got into because my last server was pretty crappy really....
i agree the Rei's minimap is awesome, although i cannot seem to get it to produce the co-ords consistently, sometimes i point at a spot and the co-ords will not show in the box at lower left.....

glad to see people actually take some time out to read here!

It's a touchy subject from my point of view, it's unfortunate the seed is public if you ask me :P.

It's a good technique to get to know the world, or just have some fun with it on your own. Of course, Minecraft and any other game will be vulnerable to people finding loopholes, but those people will be caught and punished.

This is controversial. MrJangles put it right but to be fair for everyone I just wouldn't do it but on the other hand there is no way to stop it if it does happen.

true true. i have to say though... this is rediculus. we have a livemap and world map. why need to find the land you want go explore the land thats already generated.

no garentee the land will be exactly the same as ingame here as in the seed. worlds are only a refrence to how the world generates not how the exact blocks and mountains are placed.

many seeds are randomly generated terrain. the first 500 blocks of every seed is exactly the same but then it changes.

so far in working with the seed generators, i have never seen a single block any different. every dirt mineral etc is exactly the same.
for example there is a pool in our base in the survival world, exactly the same size with the same minerals placed on same elevations, and co-ords. it is spooky how accurate it is.

i don't use this to find specific minerals, that would be boring as all h3ll, i use it mostly to find the places i want to build in....
after all i'm going to be spending many somewhat foolish hours building these projects, good to put some time into finding a location i can relate to.

again, so glad that people take the time to visit forums here, very refreshing
