While reading through Notch's twitter i found out that minecraft beta 1.6 is coming out next week.

What do you guys think of 1.6 and the maps?

Well for starters i dont think new stuff should be released until the old stuff is fixed first!

1.6 is supposed to be the bug fix game...it damn well better have no bugs.
The maps...suck. Zan's minimap is much better.

He most likely will as well. They are not gonna make 1.6 an entire bug update, there needs to be a feature.

I think maps will open a door to a lot of potential.

I really dont see the point of the new maps, as most people just use zans map which already shows you the full map and you dont need to explore the world for it to appear on map.

The maps are certainly useless, zan's minimap is everything you could ever need.
Never said he couldnt include new content just made a point that he should focus on previous bugs that have never been fixed over numerous updates.
The problem is he doesn't ever fix old bugs, then just adds new content with even more bugs. Just sounds a little pointless.

Maps are even more useless in multiplayer, the images are probably stored locally and if not there's a hard limit on the number of maps on the server.

The images aren't stored locally, I think the server just keeps data of the blocks not direct images. I thought the hard limit was somewhere over 100.000 or something.. Not too small, at least.

The hard limit for any server (single or multi) is 65536. I'm guessing this has to do with the way the map files are stored.

thats because they are assigning a 32 bit number to it. which in binary is from 0-65535, like an IP address

You are mixing up concepts here.
0-65535 uses a 16 bit unsigned integer.

Notch is probably using a 16 bits unsigned or a 32 bits signed integer to assign IDs to the map objects

Ip adresses are 4 times 8 bits (32 bits) in length and there are about 4.3 Billion combinations. (There are far less usable addresses than that)

None of you are experts. Be quiet.

Or talk about the topic.

Remind CommanderFluffy of it daily. (It's his favorite thing.)

Well , I'm concerned if we should actually update or not.
Do we have to wait for 1.6 to be availiblr for bukkit , or not?

It will most likely work like it has before, you shouldn't update until you know for sure that the server has been updated.
We'll most likely be waiting for the plugin devs to update.
