Sheep disappeared

So I've had a sheep farm going in the survival world for the last bit, I'm currently sitting in there and my sheep have mysteriously disappeared.
I know it wasn't another player or anything, I was sitting right there. I had 25+ sheep just vanish. Just wondering why that happened. Kinda depressing that I have to go out and find more sheep XP
