they don't know how or that they should set their client to the MCA version when they see in red

Right next to the 'Play' button click the little green arrow to the right and find "latest version" and you should be good to go! :p

I can't figure it out. It says the server is outdated and I do not see a little green arrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
 
pretty much click on what i have highlighted. First click the little arrow, in the red square.

then select the version that you want to play for this example i did the current version 1.12. The server is still on the previous version of 1.11.X so you are going to have to find that one on the list. sorry about that!
