Spawn questions suggestions

A lot of new people are asking questions about the rules, and we keep telling them to read the signs at spawn and forums

So I got a suggestion
make 2 passworded doors, with 1 answer hidden between the signs, and 1 answer somewhere in a tutorial in the forums

That way no new people can get out without actually reading up.

I say we don't answer their questions. Just tell them to read the forums and read the signs. Make them fend for themselves.

i dont like the idea of forcing people to read signs. they will get a much better idea of the server from looking at the forums.

if theyre too lazy to open a browser and read, they shouldnt be on this server.

the idea of that whole tower was to somewhat force them to read the signs and tell them to read the forums but some people dont care

making it even harder for people to get out would just make them leave

yeah and I get annoyed by constantly have to tell people to read the signs and forums
you can maybe make 1 sign saying: read the tutorial on the forums
and make the password somewhere in the tutorial
that way they will know from the beginning they have to read the rules
and we don't have to tell them to do it
(and less questions about how do I get out of the spawn)
(oh and make it a passworded pressure plate otherwise people will leave the door open, just realized that)

and what jeff said, people need to read the forums
yes they do
but if they know it from the beginning they have to it will be natural for them to read on forums if help is needed
and they will look there first before asking

Its a good idea, but as tigger and jeff said, if they arent reading the signs to start with what will make them want to read 2 extra signs telling them how to get out. Just keep your macro ready and hit it once questions are asked.

I mean 2 signs is everything at spawn
only 2 signs saying you have to follow a tut on minecraftaddicts to get out
That way they only have to read 2 signs, the rest can be done on the site itself.
That way people can read more easy I think, are more forced to read (can'tt get out by just running around in spawn) and get used to using the forums AND /lwc (which is a big thing in this server)

But I see everyone thinks something else, so it looks like I will have to keep my macro (which I don't use really cause I like to be more personal instead of a boring same as always message)

Ok that makes more sense. Also I don't think that you can lock pressure plates any more either.
In the end they still wont read it though and you'll have to take the time to explain it to them or send them to the forum... you can never win!

What about placing a diamond block next to a sign about griefing/stealing seems like a good litmus test as to weather or not someone is likely to randomly gank stuff. An unlocked chest would work too but is a little more tempting.

Yep, Carnage's idea of a diamond blocks sounds reasonable.
They must resist the urge to take it!

It's too bad the chat facility is so limited ATM, as player category specific messages with a timer would enable Guests to see the "go read the stickies" every N minutes. It would be a fairly simple addition to the IRC bot as well, but that would spam everyone. I think we are all conditioned to glance over initial messages like that when joining games, and with the rate of chat during the populated hours it gets pushed off their screen in seconds.
