I was thinking about the 1.6 update, how it allows SMP to go to the nether.
The Nether is only an eighth the size of the server. This allows for faster travels to places. Of course, we also have teleportation on the server, But it could be used to travel to very specific places , places you'd still have to find after a
Warp . Like a certain building u have heard about , but you dont have a pw therre and the player that was already there is offline.Portals to these places could be useful.
And we are also going to have to make a seperate world map for it. Wed have to remove the first layer. otherwise, it's just a big red block u see.
An what if someone wants to build in the Nether? Wed have to set up a system for that. Maybe it could be classified as it's own region? And we'd have to set up a pvp in there, because who dosnt want to fight in Hell? Please reply on these ideas, and thank you.

Nether could be good, it just depends on how the server handles it. I'm not sure how portals work in the normal world compared to nether, like when you build a portal in the normal world, it shows up in nether, so what happens when you build a portal in nether, does it overlap previously built things? If so, that could be a problem.

Also, you have to turn on fire to allow portals to be made, which we all know what fire does..
Unless you bug the admins 24/7 to light your portal.

There are other problems, but I'm hungry, so...

2 different worlds means 2x the content served, correct me if I am wrong but that could possibly double the workload on the server causing lag on both ends.

Godspeedz is right about the return trip, it could technically be considered griefing as the portal will be created outside of your own jurisdiction and you have no say as to where it would appear. Not to mention its made of obsidian and makes an unholy racket.

Land claims as well would need to be considered, not to mention a separate map. Its not a small thing to just flip the switch on the nether and go out to lunch.

I agree totally with both Godspeedz and Carnage, it could cause a few problems.
Not so sure what impact it would have on the server performance overall as from what I've heard the server's hardware usage is quite low.

Androcks, the total possible size of the nether is smaller than the total possible size of the regular world. What you read about vanilla smp has little bearing on what is released by the bukkit team & adjunct developers to enable a stable game with the features we need. The minecraft world is divided into chunks, the nether is just chunks generated with different rules about the blocks. Expect portals to the nether to be as controlled as our current warp and portal system is.

I appreciate the replys I have received from this, the portal built in the nether can be avoided if people are
Only allowed to make portals in the home dimension.

We could just not let fire allowed on the server, so people cant make thier own portals/bug the admins. We should only have official portals in key places; such as spawn and near warps. Thats assuming that the server can even handle it.

If the server can handle that, that can work. Unfortunately , the only lighting in the nether other than fire, is the lava , and Glowstone , which only lights up the objects around it. It will take a TON of torches and Glowstone to properly light .
Not that I want it to be completely lit, but if fires disabled, some places are gonna be pitch black
24/7 . And that could be a problem.

IF the nether works properly and we do decide to use it it will probably only have 1 portal there and 1 portal out near spawn
