I'm testing a theory. I've locally created a world where all the stone has been removed.

Think about this. Under the dirt layer is a world of dirt asteroids and mineral meteorites.

I want to see if survival is possible.
 
stone is about 80%-90% of the world it is also what forms the caves to have a safe way to bedrock and ores needed to survive with out stone in the world you would probably fall to your death trying to get ores and not really have a strong enough house to fend off creepers
 
As long as I leave trees, it's possible.

Now keeping Minecraft from crashing in this state... that's much harder.
