I decided to give 1.2 a go and I found this.
I'm wondering if anything was said about a well being added to the desert biomes?

Desert wells were added, but we don't know much about them. I believe the wiki mentions something about another boss battle, but we don't really know

In the 1.2 texture files, there were two sandstone-like textures added with hieroglyphics on them. These could possibly be part of the desert wells. Perhaps a desert stronghold? Pictures of the new textures can be found here:
