Theres really no rules other than no profanity. In order to upload it, you need a 3rd party uploading site. (Image shack, etc.)
 
Sorry for the n00b question but how do you actually set avatars and signatures, it doesn't seem that obvious...

Dont worry, its actually not that obvious. At the top right corner of the website, look for a button that says notifications. Click that. It will take you to a place where you can find your messages, edit your avatar, signature and many other things. Look on the left side of that page and find a box that says My Settings. The links for editing avatars and signatures are the first few links in that box. I hope this helps :)
