I meant that the detector rail would be situated AFTER the intersection bit. It would then send a pulse to break the loop that keeps the track in shape.
 
RS NOR latch? Is that what it's called?
I looked on the wiki page, and it's looking way too complicated to me... whatever.

I've done something like that on my mock up station. I think it still works for the most part. Have a look at it beside the boat race.
 
this still would require significantly more redstone than what is actually required, all i need to do is just make the pulse longer by punching a repeater...
