New graphics card

On my "other" PC which my bro uses, he kept complaining that his game with running 20FPS BARELY on all stats low, being nice and all i opened up the Intel Xeon computer and find the old graphics card almost burnt with the fan like dead. seriously, the fan wasn't moving at all.

I went to the nearest computer store (tigerdirect) and bought a Nvidia GT 430 for like 80$ which imo is really cheap due to the fact that PCI express x16 cards are outdated i suppose.

I head home install the card, only after 3 hours of going "FUUUUUU" over thinking i broke the computer like 3 times because it kept giving me errors in BIOS. I troubleshooted by taking out my other cards and then figured out the sound card died as well (holy crap this computer is old).

I got it installed and stuff, but here's the problem: Were talking a quad core pc with 3.00GHz and a brand new graphics card YET, its running Team Fortress 2 with only like 30 FPS and thats IF im not going into open spaces.

Any advice on what to do?

Open task manager and set TF2's priority to High (setting it to real-time will probably freeze your computer).

Open Device Manager (from control panel) and make sure your drivers are up-to-date. (the new game booster usually does this for you anyways).

Install more RAM, it is pretty cheap and easy to install. I bet around 8gigs of RAM can run most programs out there right now.

Buy a better graphics card

Buy all other computer parts, ie motherboard, cooling system, CPU's, etc.

Notice how I put the stuff you have to spend money on last....

Hey,

The most important thing you can do is go to Nvidia.com and install the latest drivers for your PC. I recommend using their uninstall utility to remove the current drivers, also download ATI's driver removal tool too if the original card was ATI, reboot, stop windows from automatically installing drivers, install the one you downloaded, reboot again, and voila.

If that works, let us know, if not, please post back with your RAM info (speed/type/ammt), and check your HD, make sure you have at least 15% of the space free, do a defrag, scan for spyware (spybot S+D or ad aware), check task manager (ctrl shift esc) process's and see which process's are hogging space if any.

If you want to inch your boosts slightly, gamebooster, tweaks, etc will help, but personally, i find its so insignificant i dont bother. I feel that's more for overclocking enthusiasts who want that 0.5-1% improvement.

On a side note for buying graphics cards, I'm a big fan of bewawa.com. I ordered my 5850 through them few months back, it was cheaper than most places, and they deliver anywhere in the GTA free, same day.

Also, when in the market for any pc upgrades, check out shopbot.ca and see if you're getting the lowest price for your card, etc.

@Godspeedz i tried game booster/setting process to High, it improves significantly, but i was hoping there was a way to make it go faster without me always having to do that

Well what gamebooster basically does is shut down the programs you have running in the background. There is a way you can shut down all those programs manually, but it is pretty tedious, and it took me several hours to get somewhat finished.

youve bought a low-end video card. even though its a 400-series nvidia card, it wont perform anything like the 460+.

what is your resolution and quality setting for the games you play? what other games are you playing that are getting poor performance?

on a gt 430, i wouldnt expect more than 30fps in games run 1080p on any quality setting higher than low. turn off anti-aliasing and shadows for your games. that should really help.

download NTune and run the system optimizer. that should clean up a few things
