Am I cheating...

If I could stop all .jar's, including chat and minimap, I would, and than impliment server wide. That's not an option today so mod management is impossible. Please understand my strong feelings towards modifying multiplayer game clients.

This is quite possible now, but to play on the server a person would have to download an agent which would have to be running. It's a part of most NAC stacks, and available through systems like OSSIM at no cost but time.

I understand the reasoning and all you have said MrJangles, but if I could not use the Dynamic light mod, my game play would be severely crippled. I have a very dark screen and even with the Dynamic light mod I am quite limited with what I can see at night.
I will of-course follow server rules.

That is not an option. We need a plugin that detects modified .jar's.

That's Minecraft! I'm a little shocked how so many players are accustomed to using mods. It's too bad Minecraft turned into that. If there were no mods, players would be pushing the game developers to impliment better controls where needed.

if their were no mods the game would have been abandoned my millions last year.

we would have a vanilla server. this community wouldnt exist and so on and so forth.

Seriously guys? What did you guys do before there were dynamic light mods? If I recall correctly, the whole point of night is that it is dark...

I also remember that it was necessary to place torches every 10 blocks to illuminate your path. That's the way minecraft was designed. The "my monitor is too dark" complaint is moot in terms of carrying a torch versus placing a torch. Torches cost coal and wood, and quite a bit of them depending on the circumstances whereas this mod simply allows you to have infinite light at no cost. I don't see how that is not considered a cheat?

With all of this in mind, as server admins we simply cannot support modded clients. If you come to us and say "My game crashes" or "I'm getting disconnected", the first thing we have to do is remove all foreign variables from the issue. This results in us asking "Are you using a vanilla client?" We understand that you are all used to the luxuries, but we would ask you to respect where we're coming from on this issue.

And Fluffy, the server mods are shared by all - there is no advantage for one person versus the next.

Okay I will turn delete the light mod
the zan's minimap and chatmod are just unmissable
they are too convenient and I would like notch implanting them (not the retarded not updating and no coords showing map)

Having something that would detect anything modified in the .jar would be aburden for many, including myself. I use single player only mods, such as the elevator mod. This would most likley be picked up by a detection plugin and boot me from the server. I 100% understand why you wouldnt want game changing mods in multiplayer, I dont want them either. But, I dont think Notch will be fixing the chat anytime soon, its definetly not on his priority list. The only multiplayer mods I have ever used is Zans minimap and enhanced chat. It can be extremly useful to copy and paste spmething into chat and have a cursor to go back and fix a typo without having to delete everything before it. I agree with Static, having a dark monitor is no exuse. I have a pretty dark monitor and I am able to explore caves with no torches at all. I dont think using a mod like a minimap or enhanced chat will give you an advantage over anyone else, as these mods are available to anyone. Notch and the Mojang team cant please over 2 million people with everything they want. That is why people mod.

I believe these mods make things more convenient and efficient. Why put up with needless tedium when you don't have to? Why do we have to use that messy F3 screen to see our coordinates on a map? I personally don't care for the light mod but things like the minimap are extremely helpful and don't ruin game-play IMO. If anyone against minimaps can give a valid reason on why they shouldn't be allowed I'll uninstall mine right away.

ill say this to close. i believe that we are haveing a huge range of stuff here.

most of this conversation is about gameplay experience. as seen here many people have different views.

as far as i can tell all existing mods that dont drastically change gameplay experience or allow you to cheat or break the system are fine.

as far as anything cheating/hacking/flying/xraypacks and so on and so forth... i see an issue with.

so back to the main topic.

minimap allowed
Hd texturepacks allowed
gsgl shaders allowed
enhanced chat allowed

anything i missed?

I think we should be specific and allow only Zan's map. I can appreciate that you enjoy seeing the location of mobs and players with CJB, but you know my opinion is that it crosses the line. You aren't going to use it to your advantage, but someone else would, and then point to your use as a precedence.

I recall whining about the server being set to day all the time, wondering why we were missing out on half the experience. :)
When mobs are back in the outlands, those using the dynamic light mod are going to have nasty surprises like the one in the image Fluffy attached quite regularly.

You should be able to barely see the world around you at night as the moon is bright, this seems to be the intended design. Adjusting the gamma or colour temp settings would help. I've just sent a feature request for a gradient image on the video settings. Perhaps we will see it in version eleventeen.

For the record, I use a vanilla client and enjoy the game as it is.

It's not hard to enjoy the game how it's suppose to be played.

I know there are people out there using mods that you wouldn't want me to know about. It's tempting when they're all packaged into one. There's nothing I can do to stop it right now. It's time to throw the cigarettes away. Support Notch's game, not someone else's. Give up modding and go vanilla! ... or use these mods until Notch addresses these issues.

I agree with this. My bright monitor only comes in handy if im walking outside and not near trees. i still use torches the majority of the time.
