Canada deported me!!!

since this was a canadian server, I figured it was appropriate:

I was traveling to Vancouver to shadow my professor for two weeks while he worked on a job. And next thing I know, I'm being denied entry and sent back on another 11 hours of flights. I was awake about 34 hours in total.

They said that what I was doing was "work" and required a permit (even though I wasn't getting paid and wasn't helping the job whatsoever)

What's up with that Canada? lol

I don't know your situation, but travelling to other countries is serious business no matter what the country. You would likely have a better chance getting in Canada because of or immigration laws compared to other countries.

If shadowing a professor isn't work, what would you call it? If you're not being paid that's still work, just volunteer. You would definitely need a work visa for that. It would be hard to convince customs you're not with your professor (taking a vacation instead) who would have a valid work visa for the occasion.

That sucks man . No one would want to go through something like that.

Yeah, i'm not knocking Canada. It's more situational -- basically I feel like my school should have figured this out before paying for my flight and sending me off.

I've been to Vancouver once before and it was awesome (even though it rained the whole time) They're about to send me back tomorrow with all the proper paperwork in place…i hope
