I recently saw Flans Airplane mod for minecraft, and I thought that it would be awesome if was added to the server. I know it is client based, so it would have to be loaded to the server.. but if that is possible that would be cool. I understand reasons for not doing it though, too fast exploration.
But maybe, like we could get a team of people (I would definitely help) to build airports at the warp of every region, and other places. It could be a cool community project. Then chests with materials to build the airplanes, and each person could have their own hangar. Once again, just a suggestion. But it would be pretty cool.

I have to say no on this one for many reasons. 1. It may lag the server. 2. There is really no use 3. If it is client based I am pretty sure you cannot load it on the server.

We like to try and keep the gameplay experience as vanilla as possible on the server to keep a "true to Minecraft" feel so mods like this probably won't be implemented (it's not up to me though so I don't want to say never) for a variety of reasons, most of which you outlined in your original post. There's also the issue of keeping it up to date with Minecraft releases and the additional stability concerns a complex plugin like this will introduce.

I have set up a server with this mod before....

I find the ModLoaderMP is very very very laggy. I think it would be awesome, but causes a lot of lag due to the lack of mod support

Oh, well if it causes so much lag then i guess it is out of the question. Oh well thanks for the consideration!

Funny, I recommended it a long time ago, then after thinking about it...

The type of mod support I want to see is like I saw in COD4 or COD5:WaW... It would download the mod (if you did not have it locally) for you into a mods folder.

Mod Support has been promised for some time....but never comes.

They do something like this for a lot of games made by VALVe, they basically download the cache of files and then you dont have to download them again for easy login to a modded server.

GMod did this, yeah. But with muchos problemos. Try downloading 100,000 lua files before joining an RP server... lame.

Most others, most popularly TF2 (running sourcemod in this case), work almost like Bukkit - in the sense that any mods are handled server-side.

Any other sorts of mods requiring client content are limited to decals, and sounds (but the user can easily opt out by disabling any custom content being downloaded).

Curiously enough, I enjoy having to download the least amount of data required (takes forever).

;)
