Getting this error? "java.net.SocketException..."

Anyone using PeerBlock (as in torrenting) may be unable to log on to the server.

I was getting the following error:

java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: Connection

On a whim I checked PeerBlock because it often blocks legitimate connections, and I saw that when trying to connect a certain Org and IP address was being logged as blocked repeatedly while I was not doing anything else. I clicked it and set PeerBlock to Allow Permenantly and voila I connected to the server.

So try that if you are getting this error and also have PeerBlack running. It's not a real error or problem, just a blocked connection.

why are you using peer block?

as for your torrents im sure they are just taking too much bandwidth.

Not torrenting anything, so it wasn't a bandwidth problem.

I'm on a public connection where I live (it's the way they have it set up here, like a hotel does it - open connection but HTTP gateway) and don't want the hundreds of unsolicited connections/scans/etc I was getting. At a glance, PB it's blocking spammers, servers identified as trojan-related, possibly botnets, and tons of other orgs that have no business connecting to my computer. It also showed me there's someone here in the apt complex snooping/connecting to their neighbors computers. Just some extra protection from random scans and connection attempts. I like knowing who is trying to connect and for what purpose. I also run a firewall and AV but they only kick in once a connection has already been made. PeerBlock prevents the initial connection, so it's like I'm invisible to port and IP range scans, sorta. PB is a small file size and is great at what it does, able to add custom blocklists and a wide range of subscription/constantly-updated blocklists of identified bad servers.
