hello everyone. all the recent bickering and immature non-sense has prompted this thread. this post is intended to be very light and hopefully slightly humourous. id like to make some suggestions that i beleive will cause a lot less headaches while using the in-game chat.

my brother and i have been running pc game servers for more than a decade and have learned a lot about socializing with people who play on them. there are many trends but here is the most important one: people love arguing and talking shit with other people on the internet because there is no chance of getting punched in the face!

there is an easy way to stop arguing and shit talking that does not involve violence...

STOP ARGUING AND SHIT TALKING. here is an example... if someone says that their xbox 360 is better than your ps3, DO NOT REPLY. IGNORE IT. this will only cause an argument and eventually a whole lot of crap i dont want to see while playing this awesome game.

we have been getting emails with numerous complaints about chat spam, arguing, and immaturity. we have noticed that everyone that is sending these complaints are feeding the person they are complaining against by arguing back with them. the entire situation would be avoided if you keep your mouth shut and post a screenshot of the offender(s) in the report forum along with the exact time it happened.

to whoever argues with face-less people in a game server:

welcome to the internet, dont feed the trolls

If only minecraft had a /mute or /ignore. It would be like I was playing with myself all the time! That doesn't sound right....but you get the idea.

Thanks Jeff. I can't agree more.

In all cases I expect personal internet shenanigans to be dealt with yourself. I'm not here to play Daddy and ban someone because they got mad at you unless they were affecting the entire server, for example, chat spamming and racism.

Everyone has been doing an amazing job keeping this friendly and welcoming so let's keep that going.

Bukkit has had /mute for a while but I've had reasons not to use it. I'll bring it up with the crew again.

We're all here to have fun. Keep it light, and if someone says something that you disagree with, do what Jeff said, and if it'll spark something, keep it to yourself. Doing this, we'll keep a fun, interactive server going where everyone can have an enjoyable experience.

Thanks guys!

The /mute will do wonders :D

Please, if u can jangles add it in, about time i needed some peace from chat spammers

chat spam. what i will do about it. if its really annoying its a ban. if both parties dont stop the argument after an admin or member has told you to. we may issue a temporary ban. if its your last warning the ban will become permanent.

thats how im dealing with it. if admin tells ya to stop drop whatever the conversation is. it is over.

Oh I would love a mute button. If it's possible jangles, I would love to have it. At least give it to members. :D

The /mute command is currently a global command which mutes the player entirely. Unfortunately, these issues are often a matter of opinion. Just because YOU don't want to listen to someone doesn't mean that the next person doesn't.

We tend to take care of the people NOBODY wants to listen to in a different manner, obviously.

Once there is a chat plugin that is both lightweight and robust enough to include personalized features such as mute, I'm sure it will garner serious attention. Until such time, I suggest we all do our best to avoid idiocy.

Static brings up a good point... Just because I find someone annoying, doesn't mean that everyone else does. Never get upset about what people are talking about. It's how they go about discussing their issue. Its very possible to have a mature conversation with differing opinions, without arguing. I love a good debate.

Its just the childish name calling and excessive swearing that bothers me. You're free to say almost anything you want here, just do it in a civilized way.

Agreed.
Childish name calling and swearing doesn't make you more mature, although most think so :p

Honestly, I don't want to put up with any crap on this server.
My old one was sooooo bad.
There was stealing and swearing and creeping (e.g. Finding out my real life info O_o which I have also seen here *cough*RefinedCode*cough*)
I don't want to put up with any of that, it will make us better if we don't, so just don't do it!
Kthxbai.

Some very good points raised here :) Also wanted to mention some very wise words Agrivane (I think it was him anyway) said on the server the other day: "If you recognise an issue, you have to power to do something about it" (or words to that effect) and I think it really applies here. If you recognise someone is annoying you, then you have the ability to ignore/not rise to it.
