If so, is it controllable?

I've been looking into the visibility factor when planning a huge area and this came across my mind.

visibilty distance depends on your computer in multiplayer. in single player the map is local. thus no lag. in multiplayer its not local.

The "Render Distance" options aren't universal values?

I took a comparison shot.

what one is single player what one is multi? and the difference with these two is height.

The first is our server.

I'll try to get a same-height capture.

The original SMP picture is approximately 175 blocks from center to edge.

In this new single player picture, the distance was approximately 215 blocks.
So a ~40 block difference. I'm certain the margin of error is no more than 2, and since they both fall on multiples of 5's, I think they could be exact.
