I just came across this awesome plugin, which shorten URL's that are too long with TinyURLs.
You can even use a custom alias at the end with /url [alias].

Sounds like a good idea but how can one tell if the link is safe?

Because urls dont work properly when they are on two separate lines. The second line doesn't count as part of the link. This is especially annoying with youtube videos and long links.

And you are pasting them into minecraft chat? For YouTube links, hit the share button, it gives you a shortened URL too

I really don't trust tinyURL links, who knows where they'll lead ;-)
