Map Art FAIL!

I need a dumbed down tutorial for map art making for someone in their late 30's (me). I was going to make a map art with the large open water on my plot and I failed in bright shiny colors. (See picture) Are central positions for maps pre-determined so I have to locate the center of the 128 x 128 before a single block is placed? Hurrrr....
 
Yes, map positions are predetermined and not centered on your player when created. It is a pain but when you do get it lined up, the outcome can be rewarding.
 
I tore down the stone brick and re-aligned it to fit the map...not only did it stay on my plot but it just missed my horse track I'm still making. Phew!
