Okay, so technically it's not my FIRST house. When I play offline or single player, I mainly stick with hidey-holes in mountainsides. Once, I made a total dirt house. A creeper exploded in front of it (R.I.P.) and I was left with rubble. That was the last straw, so I decided to start multiplayer. My house, three days in the making, came out quite nicely.

I think its time for an up size.
Try going for something about 32 x 32 for loads of room inside, then you could try using less cobblestone.
Redwood and sandstone seem to give a nice look although its over used.

and start using more expensive materials
always mine first for a while
make money
and then spend while building lavishly
