Okay, Arena End warp question

I jumped in the end portal in Arena expecting to find the region with endermen, scads of floating islands, purple buildings, etc...but wound up fighting the Enderdragon... we killed it, an egg formed, and I figured out how to get to it, but it's still locked and the warp directly under it doesn't go anywhere. How do we get back to the open End where the endermen hang out?? This is my first time with this and I'm missing something...I think....
 
Okay, Munchy came on and showed me how to throw an enderpearl through the little end-portal surrounded by bed rock. Back in business.
 
Other ways to reach the islands from the main is either fly once you have wings, it can be scary but rewarding too. The other way, how I looted many of them before the reset, is to bridge out to them roughly 1,000 blocks out. The dragon can also be re-spawned by using 4 ender crystals around the exit portal. Doing this, once the new dragon is killed, will result in the creation of an additional end gateway to the outer islands. This process can be repeated for a total of 20 end gateways.
