Hiya everyone. I tried out your server the other day, and really liked it. Ran smoothly and the folks that were online were really nice. A friend of mine logged in as well, and apparently had no lag issues whatsoever, whereas on my own private server for just him and I, he can't stay connected due to a disconnect.overflow error. So I was curious if there was anything special about your servers that I might be able to alter on my end to fix or help the problem I am having. It seems there is no real help out there to find, so my next best guess is to ask where it is working right. :) Thank you for your replies.

You will need to supply more information before anyone will be able to assist you, but generally the MC protocol is fairly horrid in terms of packet spew. That error means a buffer has filled up beyond the scope of another part of the server, this can be caused in several ways, but the most likely is a dearth of cycles on your CPU or an asymmetric network connection. (ADSL, "Fibe", Cable). The Minecraftaddicts server is a $400/month hosted system on Peer 1, which is a second (or third) tier ISP that is peered at Torix. (Which means a much shorter, faster network for many.)

Well I have comcast internet, 20 megs up, and 3.3 megs down. It isn't nearly as nice as what you guys have as a server. I don't know if it is my internet connection or his though. He has the same internet as I do, (he only lives 20 mins from my house), but I had other folks from the Help IRC channel on the forums connect and they had no issue. They dug, built, etc without any lag. For him however, it isn't possible, he keeps getting disconnected and my server says disconnect.overflow. Since he could play on your server without a problem, I figured it was some kind of setting or something. It could just be the massive improvement in speed on your hosted server then my internet connection can provide.

its not the internet. its the computer that he is useing and the computer your server is on.

server should not be on the same as what you are useing the client. his system cannot connect because you dont have ports open. or his system doesnt like you. its hard to see whats wrong with it at any point in time.

The server is ran on another computer. Is there more then 1 port that needs to be opened? I have the default 25565 port open on my firewall/router. His computer is old yes, but he can play sp great, and seemingly your server as well is fine, though without build permissions, I'm not overly sure if it is just cause he can't build yet or not.

single player and multiplayer are two completely different beasts. also if the server is old tech other computers will lag or not cvonnect to it because its old tech. we use new tech here and powerfull stuff tooo.

commander when he text: sounds like grampa talking about computers... :P

but hes pretty much right. Thought I think lorax hit it on the nose

So why can others connect with no issue then? If no one could connect, I'd be the first to say that the server is borked or something. I know my laptop is a year or so old, but it isn't completely old school hehe. I've also ran it on a i7 computer that is using all new hardware as of 4 months ago and still same problem for my friend, but for no one else. I don't know if that would rule out the asymmetric network your speaking of, as cable internet is asymmetric in nature, but for others to connect fine, but he can't, yet he can connect fine to you, I'm baffled, to say the least. I do thank you guys however very much for helping me with this, and if you folks have no better ideas or thoughts, then I think I'll let this dead horse be and accept we can't play together without being on a huge server.

Take a look at the network distance between the different people and the server, use a TCP trace rather than ICMP.
