The EULA Controversy

So as you may have heard, there is a big problem with the EULA (End User License Agreement) from Mojang about the money earned from servers. I was wondering if anyone had a certain point of view about this because this involves A LOT of money. I have a video from BebopVox that explains it very well if you are confused:

I just wanted to see what some people's point of view was on about this situation. I'm curious. Thank you and I mean no harm to anyone!

Well, as it stands the MCA server actually ignores some points in the EULA
Namely, selling in game items (like tools) and in game features (like flying)
Which Mojang does not like
Also one of the points that came up is thas some servers write these down as donations, and not as purchases which would be a better description

I actually like how the EULA controversy came about, because Mojang prefers users to have a similar experience, no matter how old you are, where you come from or how much money you have.

Of course servers need to keep running, and usually that costs a bit of money.
I understand the need for donations.
How I would really like to see this go is.
-Servers divide donations and purchases
-A server should be the same for everyone, without donation perks (however a different color name or other feature that does not change gameplay to show donations is fine to me)
-Servers set themselves apart from others by treating their costumers equal and with respect
-Servers will set themselfs apart from other servers by being original and/or having a reason for people to be on the server instead of being on another server
-Servers don't ask or require for donations nor do they sell things to get donations, however, need to earn donations and be appreciative about them

In summary
-Donations are charity, charish them
-Users will not have a different experience playing on a server whether they donate or not

I was out of town this weekend, seems I missed quite a bit.

This is interesting. I'd like to see where this all goes. Hopefully the outcome will be positive.

thanks for posting this mat, i watched the video and learned some stuff.
Always a good thing!!

My feeling is that we are a small server and we probably won't be affected by this, unless there is there going to be a "tax" or "charge" by Mojang on all sales based on the "minecraft game" somehow.

If Mojang IS able to get a percentage of money in the "pay for play" category, like /fly, /godmode, /kits,
THen humble donation will be a much better option to help with the server.

This partly makes me feel a bit better, considering how many servers I've joined that you have to "donate" to even play. If you don't all you can do is run around spawn.

First, I think that a lot of people reacted to the "news" emotionally instead of getting the facts. Mojang released the news poorly, no denying that - they should have used a more official channel than Skype and given better clarification about what they planned to do, but I can't see them cutting their own throat by impacting the income of minecraft servers (at least, not the reasonable ones...)

Second, no new EULA has been published, there hasn't even been a statement made about specific changes. And yet... there was a DDOS that crashed the servers when the news of the change was made on SKYPE! (Mind ya, not the official Mojang website or in the game feeds itself but just mentioned on a chat program..) How stupid is that? "We're going to rant and rave at you for changing the rules even though you haven't changed them yet, haven't said what specifically is changing AND when you do make the changes you're going to make our illegal actions legal. Soooo...in reaction we're going to crash the servers that let us play the game, as a form of protest!"

Sorry, but every person involved (on both sides) gets a new title : -- S T U P I D I T Y I N C A R N A T E --

To be honest, I don't think Mojang should try to control any part of what servers charge in game. If people are dumb enough to pay an outrageous price for something in the game, that's on them. Mojang is not the world's babysitter or accountant, so why worry about what players are paying on a server? "Buyer beware" is the motto of the day. Still, even if Mojang is silly enough put their foot in this bear trap, I can't see them making any changes that would hurt the average server.

Hey everyone, thanks for joining in on this topic. I just wanted to say that they did post some info about the goals of the new EULA on their website. Here is a link to anyone lazy: Click Here!

Thanks again to everyone who responded to this!

That is exactly why I started another threat over here Click
But this time not only because it will have an effect on this server and users, but has an effect on every server.
That's why I hope everyone makes a thread like this or mine on every minecraft forum website.

Just another update, they have answered some more FAQ's here: Click Here! Thank you astraeasan for your input and other thread!

I have not read a single link, all I know is I have happily donated to MCA as I know the owner has personally spent a fortune over the years to let me while away my free time, what a guy! If MOJANG want to screw with that, then they can go get well and truly fluxed.
