For too long noobs have been getting away with excessive caps lock and spamming. It's getting ridiculous.

Nearly every time I log on, I see all out caps lock wars waging (not to mention the horrible grammar, my God), spam flying off the screen, and kids completely ignoring our rules.

They don't seem to understand server rules and thus think that there's not discipline on the server. It seems like in most cases reports are ignored (I know not all are, but still, the majority seem to be).

In the 3 minutes I've been typing, I've seen 2 cases of excessive caps. Today alone Pika has been warned 4 times for cap usage, and continues to ignore those telling her to stop.

I would like to see an end to noobs taking advantage of the lack of direct consequences of breaking rules. I do NOT mean to make rules stricter, or to put in new plugins to kick when caps are used. What I DO mean is for staff to be more alert and more readily able to send out a kick or a mute to those who are abusing the excessive caps lock/spam policies.

I mean no offense when stating this, but our mods seem to be pretty lax on muting. I hope the staff will consider amping up their approach to battling constant caps and spam, be it via forum reports or direct action.

Thank you.

Edit: For clarity; the reason I mentioned bad grammar was not so much to argue that people should use proper grammar, but to emphasize how obnoxious it is to see bad grammar in all caps. After I told this same thing to scottenergybeam, Pika went "THEY LOVE U", thus strengthening my point.

I agree maple! Pika is goes too far! All the time she's spamming in chat using caps. I agree. I've done this before and I am ashamed of that fact but I will stop. I now see maple is completely right. But mainly pika is CONSTANTLY spamming in chat using capslock and it gets old!!!!

Okay first off thanks for the post, it's well crafted and could serve as a good model for expressing an opinion in a coherent and pleasant way. Obviously based upon the responses this is something you guys are getting bothered by and it's certainly very annoying.

Staff response on all caps might need a bit of a rework but for the time being I just wanted to make it clear that this isn't something we just aren't noticing, the problem is it's a fairly tricky issue to deal with so I figured I'd share what I consider to be some of our challenges when dealing with this so nobody feels like they've been forgotten about.

First off plugins are always a solution that's requested but it's a tricky one, the majority of the chat filter plugins work on a sampling basis and kick if a percentage of caps are used per message. Obviously we wouldn't want to kick someone for using an acronym like MCA and it'd be fairly tricky to configure. Most of the caps I'm seeing at present are endings or beginnings of sentences e.g HEY this is AWESOME! which are harder to filter out than malicious all caps spam.

From experience, kicks are basically pointless, nobody who regularly uses caps reads the message and people tend to see it as an attention seeking thing. For example, get kicked, immediately relog, first thing in chat: "WHAT?! WHY WAS I KICKED?!"

Jail is also a little strong imho, we see it as a tempban and don't hand them out particularly lightly, the key thing we look for when jailing is malicious intent, most of the all caps seems to be down to immaturity or just plain ignorance, sadly lots of users will just flat out ignore chatter from everyone except the one or two people they know on the server rendering staff requests basically pointless.

Anyway, to cap it all off (pun not intended) I figured I'd talk solutions, muting for a temporary period is probably the best solution, the player is warned a few times and then just silently muted for say, 10 minutes and msged with the reason. Based on this thread this is something I might start testing out as I prefer it to a /jail for these kind of situations.

We'll see if there's anymore we can do to combat this and if you're someone who regularly uses all caps in the meantime, can you please just knock it off? It's not difficult, you didn't do it "by accident" and it's an obnoxious tendency.

Just an FYI too, this is just my thoughts on the matter rather than anything that's been discussed in the staff forums!

EDIT: Just noticed the comment about reports getting ignored, this is very much not the case, the majority are just lacking in stuff we can use or take a while to respond to due to staff discussion.

Thanks Yenn. I was leaning more towards hoping more mutes were sent out as they send a stronger message than a simple jail.

And I know you guys don't ignore reports, but sometimes it just feels that way, such as when you see a person who was reported a few hours ago doing the same thing they were previously. Not saying that happens all the time, but you know what I mean.

Thanks for addressing this Yenn!

Is there a way to make the field where comments are displayed as a Proper Format, Ie All Words Start With A Capital, or the field only displays lower case. For AWESOME we would have to revert to ****awesome!!!*** or something?

Mhmm. I know a server where what it does is it capitalizes sentences and limits caps to 30% of the sentence, It also puts punctuation. However casual messages such as OK turn into 'Ok.' And hi turns into 'Hi.' creating a dullness. However, Jeff, this is possible, and I can get the plugin names if an admin/operator were to agree to this.
