Instead of always downgrading and upgrading you can do this:

http://minecrafterapp.wordpress.com/
On the right side of this page download the one that is for your operating system.

Find it by right clicking on my computer and click properties

After downloading update your minecraft to 1.5 (or latest version) I know it sounds crazy but just do it.

Then download the jar file on tiggers post
here:
http://www.minecraftaddicts.com/showthread.php/3431-beta-1.3-rollback

download the jar file

Make a folder called what ever you want.

Place the minecrafter and the jar from tigger's post in it.

Then run the minecrafter.

click new

in the top left text box write a name for it.

Then click +

find the jar file you downloaded and add it

click save as and give it a name

now click close and click launch minecraft
Click temporary.
Now your at 1.3

To run minecraft at 1.5 run the regular client

To run at 1.3 double click minecrafter and click launch minecraft

If you need any help be just post the problem and i'll try and help you out

Or:
1. Copy the current minecraft.jar somewhere.
2. Replace it with the compatible version.

i found this easier, once it was all set up. its just an idea not something people have to do
