it works if you talk really well and aren't half mumbling to yourself.
thought my wife will play with the kinect, because controllers are strange for her, but she still gets frustrated.
its simple buttons don't fail. all you need for the kinect to piss you off is one misunderstanding.
if you have a conversation with some one else in the room some times it picks it up and changes what ever is going on for no reason.
the biggest problem right now for the kinect is not the swiping or the voice recognition its the fact that the menu system is now bogged down and very slow. making any thing you do twice as long. so its just easier to just take a controller.
so the tech is not really there. it feels more like a tech demo.
and then we can get into the ideal room size and space for the kinect most people dont have it or its not always the best space. adding to it being more of a tech demo.
thought you dint ask for in game I think it relates to how the system works.
most games don't even work really well with it.
as a system for "kids games" where the kinect can fail with out it being noticeable or there is less consequence if it dose fail, then it's actually really cool and kinda fun.
these are some great working examples:

bottom line I feel like the "Durango" (the next xbox) will have better tech and maybe then most of this will have been figured out. its projected to be announced in 2013 so who knows. but as it stands not something I would use all the time.
as for the movies thing netflix with its small selection has still replaced rental. and its prob one of the most used app on any console. (hulu or hbo in the U.S.) thought we use the wii for that cause the bandwith in canada is killer if you try to view things in hd.
