Why we should skip 1.8 until 1.9

Minecraft 1.8 doesn't work on Mac OSX 1.5.8
1.9 will work again, tho.

No one on 10.5.8...if they are, it's 30 bucks to upgrade.
That's 30 bucks less to donate to the server... plus, in my case, it's 30 bucks I CAN'T spend as I'm saving up to buy a new computer. If you upgrade to 1.8 I and probably several others won't be able to play until 1.9.
And what will 1.8 really add to the server? A few new blocks; e.g stone brick; half stone brick; stone brick stairs, Giant mushrooms and endermen in outlands... well, nothing vital or lifechanging basically, because all the other features require new chunks, like NPC villages, mineshafts and strongholds.

The server should remain unchanged until -everyone- is capable of playing. Otherwise it would be unfair to those that have donated and our regulars. The server's goal should be "fun", not "technicalities" :)

Akimotokun, I fully agree with you. You said it better than I could.

That said, your signature is broken btw.

Think this is an isolated issue to specific video cards on macs and its not worth holding up progress for.

As KKing said, it worked fine on his computer...

Hmm any chance all the mac users who are comfortable handling rollbacks could give 1.8 a quick test to see if theres a simple fix or whether they get the bug. As akimo said, imo we shouldn't update if theres issues for some of our mac using members, especially as 1.8 has other issues (also the much hyped endermen don't function properly in multi)

I tried it, didn't work. Didn't work at all.
I bet the same problem is still happening to people with Tiger, and there's more people running that OSX still than you'd think.

1.8 will probably delayed so much that there will be a fix out... so don't worry untill the actuall update is here! as for now: Someone plz go make a plugin without bugs that fix the piston - sand bug...

I've had no problems with OSX (although I am not running 10.5.8). In fact, I'm much happier with 1.8 than I have been with any of the previous versions. It runs well and there are a few features that make game play much more fun, new, and exciting.

Of course, if a significant portion of our members can't play, I doubt we'll make the switch. But at the moment it seems like it's an isolated issue. Maybe there's even a way to get by it/ provide a fix? And, like Autom mentioned, we still have plenty of time :)

And as a side note, I would strongly recommend Snow Leopard (I believe that's the next update from 10.5.8). Not only is it reasonably priced, but it will improve your computers speed overall and it will even free up some more disk space (for more minecraft saves of course!).

Good luck, and I'll do some research to see if I can come up with a fix. But for now, we can all hang out on the best minecraft server!

I hope you're buying a PC...

Basically you're asking we all wait so you can still play?
I'd love to have new blocks as soon as they can be made available considering the mods we run.
More block variety = More possibilities...

It doesnt free space if it doesn't delete anything.

I know for a fact that Apple changed the way they display Hard disk capacity to match what's written on the box. So it's powers of 10 instead of powers of 2.
Which for a 100GB drive is about 7% difference.

100GB? That's not enough. I need my 1 Terabyte...

But on the actual topic at hand, I'll agree with Akimotokun, it shouldn't change until everyone's computer is capable of adapting, all the bugs are fixed, etc. Those of you who want to use the new blocks, I say to you: single player mode.

I say we update. How many people here are still running Leopard? It's a 4 year old OS, I feel that the rest of us shouldn't be held back solely because of a few old Macs.. Nothing against people on 10.5, this is just my opinion.

$30 is not alot for a new OS. We should update as soon as we can, the longer we wait, the less new player will join. New players wont roll back just to try out a server, I wouldnt do it if I was new here.

Exactly! It creates more work (switching .jars, even if its nothing to some of us), and keeps out new players from joining. I say we update.
